| Greetings! | |
Welcome to your Fall 2011 issue of the LIFEcycle Circular.
It's unmistakable that summer has ended, but with the passing of the warm season, we welcome one of the most rewarding times of the year for LIFEcycle - grant awards! Calls for proposals have gone out to area hospitals and we intend to distribute funds around Thanksgiving time... which leads to the next comment... THANK YOU!
Each and every person involved with LIFEcycle, especially Ride 'Round Rhody volunteers/cyclists, deserves a huge round of applause for a job WELL DONE! Once again, the fundraising total for RRR was exceeded by our generous donors because of the hard work of the event's participants. Together, you raised more than $41,312 for local cancer treatment! There were also 112 cyclists (2/3 of whom were able to get the ride in before Irene* stormed through), setting a new event record for both registered and actual riders!
YOU are helping change the face of cancer treatment in Rhode Island, and you are helping improve treatment worldwide. Your commitment to the community - both local and global - is greatly appreciated. Thank you. In this issue of the LIFEcycle Circular you get to watch an awesome recap video of RRR2011 and will read about a new partnership that will benefit the people of our community through improved fitness; a reenergized plan for Team LIFEcycle, a call to action to help take LIFEcycle to new heights and some health and safety articles posted to Active.com. Thanks for reading! *Following three years of vicious weather - the first and third RRR shared a weekend with a hurricane and in 2010 we rode through a monsoon - the ride weekend has been moved two weeks earlier, clear of hurricane season... Hopefully this will mean better weather! |

LIFEcycle partners with
The Forge: Personal Training Studio
| |
Beginning in Jaunary 2012, LIFEcycle will offer two separate monthly fitness classes for cancer survivors and pre/post-operative bariatric surgery patients.
Hosted at The Forge: Personal Training Studio and led by Leo Desforges, an ACE certified personal trainer (and three-time Ride 'Round Rhody veteran), these classes will be held free of charge for members of the respective communities.
The group sessions will cover a variety of resistance exercises that promote general strength and fitness for everyday life. They will also provide an introduction to traditional weight training and attendees will have the opportunity to benefit from Leo's expertise.
For more about this program, please email Jacob Brier.
The Forge: Personal Training Studio is conveniently located at 999 Main Street, in Pawtucket. It is part of the Hope Artiste Village. To learn more about The Forge: Personal Training Studio, please email Leo Desforges, owner.

Team LIFEcycle Update
| |
Before you read about the changes to TLc for the coming season, we must first share some very exciting news... On September 11, 2011, Team LIFEcycle won the honor of the fastest male team at the 10th annual JCC 5K Road Race and 1.5 mile walk, sponsored by The Miriam Hospital. The team was led by our resident speedster, Alex Mayer, who ran the 5K in 20 minutes, flat (he went on to post a sub-20 5K about a month later), and rounded out by Jacob Brier and Moshe Berman. Other TLc'ers were in attendance as walkers, volunteers and spectators.
Each season we have created a new, what-we-hope-to-be improved format for Team LIFEcycle, and this year is no different -- except that this year one of the changes should be what makes the difference: it will be professionally staffed/coached, rather than organized by team-member collaboration and self coached.
The team will be diversified into three categories: running, biking and triathlon. Each group will have a minimum of one group-specific activity per month and the entire team will come together for one conditioning session per month (minimally). Additional events (specific and collective) will be planned periodically throughout the season as well.
The schedule and exact format is being finalized, but to stay informed or offer suggestions, please email Jacob Brier.

Call to Action: Volunteers Needed
| |
"Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer." - Alan Jacobson
As LIFEcycle increases its scope of impact on the community, the need for volunteers to maintain its core initiatives grows. If you are interested in helping shape LIFEcycle's future, your help would be greatly appreciated in the following areas:
- RRR Steering Committee: The group meets a few times, beginning in the winter and lasting until the ride. Help is needed from cyclists and volunteers, alike. You can help with things like recruiting participants, soliciting sponsors, designing promo material, generally helping to spread the word, and more. To join the committee, please email David Arndt.
- Social Media (this is an easy one!): Please help increase our reach on
acebook and witter. Ask you friends and followers to "like" and follow our pages! - 2011 Yearbook: The new Yearbook is being put together and should be ready to reach inboxes by the holidays, and mailboxes shortly after New Year's (print version sent to 2011 riders and donors of $100 or more). It would be awesome to have articles (even if only a couple sentences; limit of one page), quotes, photos, etc. from our riders and volunteers. To submit something, please email Jacob Brier.

Safety Warning: Let your light shine!
| |
By John Dugan
For Active.com
Awareness is the key. Cyclists simply do not have the mass or size of a car and are essentially invisible to motorists. Furthermore, there are not enough cyclists on the roads to make an impact. The everyday car driver is not accustomed to seeing cyclists on the road and, therefore, cyclists are not on the driver's radar screen.
